The program
WHAT IT IS
Most parents come to martial arts for one of three reasons. Their child is being pushed around at school and they want them to be able to handle it. Their child has energy that no amount of playground time absorbs. Or their child has tried a sport, sat on a bench for a season, and quietly decided they are not sporty.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling art, leverage, position and control, with no striking in it, which makes it the martial art parents and pediatricians tend to be least nervous about. It is also one of the few children's activities where a small child who thinks carefully genuinely beats a bigger one who does not.
Call or email us with your child's age and we will confirm the right class for them.
Labyrinth BJJ is ranked in the top 1% of academies nationally on jits.gg (#39 of 7,869, as of September 24, 2026). That is a competition statistic about the whole Labyrinth team, not about Wharton. It is the record of the school Wharton belongs to, founded by the instructor Joe trains under.
What kids get
MORE THAN TECHNIQUE
Jiu-jitsu is the vehicle. These are the things they build along the way.
Focus
Listening and following instructions
A class has a structure and a respectful way of working with a partner. Children learn to listen, wait their turn and try again.
Body control
Coordination and moving well
Coordination and balance are at the heart of the art, and falling without getting hurt is among the first skills of jiu-jitsu. They carry over to every other sport.
Confidence
Handling pressure calmly
Working with a partner and staying calm while you solve a problem is a skill that shows up well outside the gym.

Jiu-jitsu is one of the safest martial arts a child can do, because there is no striking in it at all. Falling safely is one of the first skills of the art.
A t-shirt and shorts or leggings with no zippers, buttons or pockets, and a water bottle. If your child does not have a gi, tell us when you arrive and we will let you know what to bring.
No. Competition is always optional at Labyrinth. Plenty of students train for years and never enter a tournament.
No. Many of the children who start jiu-jitsu have tried a team sport, sat on a bench and decided they are not sporty. Jiu-jitsu is one of the few activities where a small child who thinks carefully can genuinely beat a bigger one who does not.
